The Ebonyi State Government has arrested over 30 suspected s+x workers and sealed a guest house in Abakaliki following alleged security concerns and the discovery of substances suspected to be hard dr+gs at the premises.
The operation was carried out by the Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Planning, Richard Ugo Idike, in collaboration with the Commissioner for Internal Security, Prince Etta Uka Ude, security operatives and members of the ministry’s task force.
Speaking during an inspection of the facility, Idike expressed concern over alleged security threats linked to activities at the guest house, noting that the presence of individuals reportedly from different states had raised concerns about public safety.
He disclosed that substances suspected to be hard dr+gs, including materials allegedly containing Colos and Indian hemp, were recovered during the operation. Security operatives subsequently took over the matter for further investigation.
The commissioner also said the facility was operating in an unapproved building, reiterating the state government’s commitment to enforcing building regulations and ensuring that properties in Abakaliki comply with approved development plans.
He directed that the guest house be sealed indefinitely pending clarification of the circumstances surrounding its operations and compliance with the ministry’s requirements. The property owner was also instructed to visit the ministry to address the outstanding issues.
In his remarks, Ude said the government’s priority was to protect residents and ensure that business premises were not used as havens for criminal activities.
He added that the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru remained committed to maintaining peace, law and order across the state.
The commissioner called on security agencies to intensify surveillance of establishments suspected of engaging in illegal activities, particularly in Abakaliki. He also emphasised the need for cooperation among government agencies, security operatives and residents to identify and address potential security threats.
At the time of filing this report, the over 30 arrested individuals had reportedly been taken into police custody for further investigation, while the guest house owner had yet to be arrested.
